Rebecca preps the crowd at dawn.
The first week of December has always been the death knell for winter running. The marathon is over, Thanksgiving has passed in all its behemoth caloric glory, and it's getting much colder (and darker). We start seeing lots of posts asking things like "How do you stay motivated to run in the winter?" Well if you want to charge your engine and start the winter off with a bang, we suggest waking up early and participating in The Rocky 50k Fat Ass Run this Saturday Dec 5th.
What is The Rocky 50k, you ask? Well, it all started a few years ago with an article by Dan McQuade in Philly Mag, mapping the "actual" training run from Rocky II scene by scene. What resulted was a sprawling 31-mile tour all over Philadelphia. Then local runner, Back On My Feet member (and RUN215 Admin, WOOP!) Rebecca Barber took to the next level by creating an actual fatass run starting at the original location in South Philly and finishing by running up the Art Museum steps, just like the movie. It was absolutely insane, and it was a hit.
Needless to say, the crowd went wild. The run collected hundreds of pounds of shoes to raise money for Back On My Feet, runners dressed up in their grey sweats and red headbands, and a serious case of FOMO set in for all who did not attend. The local running community went abuzz, prompting articles in the local media, catching the attention of Runner's World Magazine, and the national media following a less-than-well-recieved cease and desist from the organizers of another race with the same name (COUGH COUGH!).
This year is going to be even BIGGER, and you don't want to miss out. Whether your intention is to hang for a few miles or trek the whole journey, here's some important information:
DATE: Dec 5th, 2016
LOCATION: The corner of Wolf & Lambert Street, Philadelphia PA 19145
NEED-TO-KNOW: Bring your old/slightly worn shoes to donate to Back On My Feet, wear clothes appropriate for making a 31-mile trek, bring money & your phone because it's 2015.
